this strange festival is known as 'Burial of Pachencho ' and it held In the town of Santiago de Las Vegas, in Cuba.the town is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of the capital Havana.Since 1984 the festival has been celebrated every year on February 5 and people celebrate it with great enthusiasm.people play drums during the Burial of Pachencho celebration .
At the beginning of the year, A man was selected as a pachencho whom would be buried on the day of the festival.in the morning of that particular day, the annual event is announced. then the pachencho (selected man) is lie down into coffin garlanded with a wreath of flowers, and pretended to act dead with his eyes fixed staring at the ceiling.then his widow start to wail and mourn and saying
"How could you leave me alone? Why have you left me alone? Ay... Pachencho... What have you done?"
then, a tractor pull a trailer slowly through the streets carrying the coffin, the widow and a four-piece tropical band .the trailer carrying Pachencho's coffin was covered in a couple of handmade posters with the words: "Que en paz descanse" (rest in peace) and "A Pachencho Te Deseamos Feliz Viaje" (we wish you a good trip Pachencho)
in the rally some of women act like Pachencho widow so that it seems like a funeral festival.After reaching the graveyard.In presence pope, maintaining all convention of funeral, people put the coffin in the grave .then a widow mourns on the death of that person by taking his name very loudly.Then villagers splashed rum into pachencho's mouth from above, and he opened his eyes and climbed out of the tomb.
But, What is the significance of this strange festival? Or the pachencho ? Alvaro Hernandez, who is local residents and participant of the this festival answered the question.he said Absolutely pachencho is a fabulous character .another participant named Divaldo Aguiar who played 'pachencho' for several time said being reborn is the most beautiful thing there is in life . he also said when i came up from the grave, then it seems i get back a new life .
in fact, in 1984 the villagers decided to keep a program to mark the end of local carnival season and the program will be held in a pseudo-funeral.at that time a play named 'Burial of Pachencho' had been shown at the town theater and it was very popular among the villagers.without any reason the villagers named the program 'Burial of pachencho' and they set 5th february for the annual event.
