Introduction
Nosebleed means bleeding from the nose and it is noticed when the blood drain out trough the nostrils .we know, the nose is a part of our body and it is situated in a vulnerable position on the face. It contains many tiny blood vessels.If these blood vessels break or damage for any reason, then bleeding starts from these blood.During a nosebleed, blood flow from one or both nostril. Nosebleeds can occur at any age but are most common in children aged 2-10 years and adults aged 50-80 years.Sudden nosebleeds may seem scary and it can be Frightening.But most nosebleeds are not serious and can be handled easily at home.Although, sometimes medical treatment may be necessary. According to medical term, nosebleed also known as 'epistaxis"
Nosebleeds are categorized based on where they originate.There are two main types of nosebleeds
1.Anterior nosebleeds are the most common and most nosebleeds (more than 90%) are included in it
this nosebleed occurs in the lower part of the septum of the nose.the nasal septum is the wall that separates the nasal cavity into two nostrils and it is made of bone & cartilage.this septum contains blood vessels.Anterior nosebleeds are usually easy to control at home.
2.posterior nosebleeds are not more common than anterior nosebleeds.this nosebleed is seen more in adult than children.Posterior nosebleeds begin from an artery in the back or deepest part of the nose.this nosebleed can be dangerous and patient have to admit in hospital
1 Do not be afraid and remain calm
2 .Sit down from standing or sit up from laying down.But you should sit in upright position.By remaining in upright position, you can reduce blood pressure in the blood vessels of your nose.and it helps to stop nosebleeds.
3..Lean your head slightly forward so that the nosebleeds can go out trough the nostrils but don't lean your head in back.by leaning your head in back, The blood can flow down in your stomach trough throat and this swallowed blood can cause nausea, vomiting.A towel or tissue can be held under your nose to collect the blood. If any blood gathers in your mouth you should spit out that blood.
4.Keep your head higher than the level of the heart. Don't lay flat or put your head between your legs
5.By using your thumb and index finger firmly pinch the soft part of your nose completely to shut nostril of your nose and then breathe through your mouth.keep pinching for a full 10 minutes.if your nose is still bleeding after 10 minutes, you should hold pinched for more 10 minutes. Most nosebleeds are stopped after 10 to 20 minutes.
6.The pinching applies pressure to the septum of the nose. this septum is typically the source of the bleeding.thus the pressure helps to stop nosebleeds.
7.You can apply an ice pack on your nose and cheeks because cold will constrict the blood vessels and help to stop the bleeding.
8.You can also use an Ice cube in your mouth.Ice cubes help to achieve lower temperature and lower temperature reduces blood flow of nose.
If the bleeding is severe or it is continually more than 30 minutes.please call the doctor.
